Zero1ne Day
현대차 제로원은 Art + Tech + Biz를 모토로, 예술과 기술의 결합을 통해 비즈니스에 새로운 영감을 제시하고자 만들어진 혁신적인 공간이다. 미디어 아티스트와 스타트업 기업이 함께 모여 새로운 창의적 생태계를 구축하는 것을 목표로, 2017년 착공되었다.
새로운 혁신 이노베이션 센터를 위해 예술가에게 공간 해석을 맡기자는 결정에 따라, 당시 베니스 비엔날레 한국관 대표 작가로 참여했던 이완이 크리에이티브 디렉터를 맡게 되었다. 제로원은 약 270평 규모의 실내 공간에 도시를 축소해 놓은 구조를 기반으로, 세상을 뒤집을 야심 찬 해커들의 아지트라는 콘셉트로 디자인되었다.
공간의 중앙에는 휴식, 파티, 세미나, 강연등이 가능한 광장을 조성하고, 광장 우측에는 스타트업들이 모여 있는 오피스 공간을 배치했으며, 광장 좌측에는 미디어 아티스트들이 자유롭게 작업할 수 있는 공용 스페이스를 마련했다. 스타트업 오피스 공간은 효율성 중심의 배치보다는 독립적인 구조를 채택해, 공간 사이사이에 골목을 형성한 것이 특징이다. 모든 공간을 연결하는 골목길을 통해 마을처럼 오피스와 오피스 사이를 걸어 다닐 수 있도록 설계했다. 또한 휴게공간과 미팅룸 등이 독특하게 배치되어있고 공간과 공간은 서로 연결되거나 차단될 수 있도록 변형되는 공간으로 설계되었다.
미디어 아티스트들의 실험 공간은 실험실/공장을 모티브로 구성되었으며, 최첨단 장비와 물리적 공구를 함께 배치해 코딩부터 목공 작업까지 모두 가능하도록 설계되었다. 이는 디지털과 아날로그, 기술과 신체적 노동이 공존하는 창작 환경을 구현하기 위한 구조다.
제로원은 2018년 완공되어 공식 오픈했으며, 이후 전 세계의 수많은 예술가와 기업들이 방문했다. 제로원은 매년 새로운 예술가와 스타트업을 공모를 통해 선발·지원하고 있으며, 매년 가을 제로원 데이(Zer0ne Day) 행사를 열어 1년간 진행된 작업들을 발표한다. 이완은 2018년 첫 번째 제로원 데이의 아트 디렉터를 맡아 공간과 전체 콘셉트를 제안하고 총괄했다.
Hyundai Motor Group ZER01NE is an innovative platform founded on the motto Art + Tech + Biz, created to generate new forms of inspiration for business through the convergence of art and technology. Conceived as a space where media artists and startups come together to build a new creative ecosystem, the project was initiated in 2017.
As plans for a new innovation center took shape, a decision was made to entrust an artist with the interpretation of the space. Lee Wan, who was representing Korea at the Venice Biennale at the time, was appointed Creative Director. ZER01NE was designed as an approximately 900-square-meter interior environment structured like a condensed city—imagined as a hideout for ambitious hackers seeking to overturn the world.
At the center of the space is a plaza that accommodates rest, gatherings, seminars, and lectures. To the right, office spaces for startups are arranged, while to the left, shared workspaces allow media artists to work freely. Rather than prioritizing efficiency-driven layouts, the startup offices adopt independent structures, forming alley-like passages between spaces. These interconnected pathways enable movement through the environment as if walking through a small village. Lounge areas and meeting rooms are uniquely positioned, and the spaces are designed to be flexibly connected or separated as needed.
The experimental zone for media artists is modeled after laboratories and factories, equipped with both cutting-edge digital tools and physical equipment. From coding to woodworking, the space supports a wide range of practices, embodying a creative environment in which digital and analog processes, technology and bodily labor, coexist.
Completed and officially opened in 2018, ZER01NE has since welcomed artists and companies from around the world. Each year, the platform selects and supports new artists and startups through open calls, and every autumn hosts ZER01NE Day, an annual event presenting the outcomes of a year’s work. Lee Wan served as Art Director for the inaugural ZER01NE Day in 2018, proposing and overseeing both the spatial design and the overall concept.
